This would mean only opening one or two ports. It would be much more secure from my perspective to access the VM as a sort of remote KVM rather than dealing with opening up ports for remote access to the VM itself. RDP or remote access into the VMs is not ideal because it would require "punching holes" in firewalls and such to get that access. Something to let me run some virtual machines on my Linux server, which can be accessed outside the network via a lightweight console application, but retain use of the Linux machine host OS for other tasks as well. The ideal solution for me would be something like the older VMware Server product.

drivers running in the VM would not be able to see or access the hardware features. While I could virtualize the Linux system, this is infeasible because I'm also using advanced hardware features of the server (hardware RAID, network card acceleration, etc.) which would not be available from within the virtual machine - i.e. It would require replacing the bare-metal OS. (Not to mention I'm not sure if the license even allows this.)ģ.

Again, I need to install Workstation on my Windows laptop, which seems overkill just for remote access to virtual machines. I'm currently using this setup, but it's not ideal.

In any case, the client side requires me to install Workstation or Fusion on the client machine - I'd prefer a more lightweight solution.Ģ. This would require me to setup a Windows box, or to replace Linux on my high-end server with Windows. This box is currently serving as a Linux server and is also providing some other services - my private file server, a web server, and some development tools (Git, etc.) It's currently running VMware Workstation (see below).ġ. I currently have one single high-end server box (2TB disk, 32GB RAM, 8 cores). I am however looking to setup some kind of remote access to virtual machines running inside my home network. I have used both Fusion and Workstation locally on my portable machines. I use virtual machines for my own personal use.
